Professional Care Manager

Steven D. Powell, MSN, RN, MEDSURG-BC, CRRN, NHDP-BC, is based in Houston, Texas, and brings a thoughtful, well-rounded approach to care shaped by both his clinical experience and his global perspective. As a registered nurse with a background in medical-surgical care, rehabilitation, and healthcare disaster response, Steven combines strong clinical knowledge with a calm, grounded presence that helps clients and families feel supported and understood. Over the past three years, he has also served as the primary caregiver for his mother, further deepening his empathy and enhancing the thoughtful, compassionate care he provides.
Before joining Indigo Care Management, Steven spent nearly a decade at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he cared for a diverse patient population and took on additional leadership roles, including serving as a People With Disabilities Program Manager and teaching CBRNE decontamination. His work has also extended beyond the hospital setting through disaster response efforts across the country, including supporting communities affected by natural disasters and public health emergencies.
Steven’s path into healthcare is unique; he originally studied communications at Tulane University and was part of the first class admitted after Hurricane Katrina, an experience that shaped his resilience and perspective. He later pursued nursing and earned his master’s degree from Duke University, focusing on leadership in healthcare.
Having lived in multiple cities around the world, Steven brings a strong cultural awareness and adaptability to his work. He values connection, clear communication, and meeting clients where they are, both emotionally and clinically.
At his core, Steven is an advocate. He is passionate about ensuring his clients feel heard, respected, and cared for, and he consistently goes above and beyond to support their needs. His work in healthcare policy and nursing advocacy reflects that same commitment, supporting not only the individuals he serves but also contributing to meaningful improvements in the healthcare system as a whole.
